The service was the worst I have ever experience. (We really liked the Collard a dip which was delivered warm.). The food was ok, but may have been much better if served on time. The restaurant was closed (after 10:20 pm) before we were finally able to pay our checks and exit. I was so tired that I did not even notice that my friends cornbread muffins were on my check. There was NO check back by the server after our food arrived, and our plates were not cleared. We were so exhausted by the time our food arrived, that we were not very impressed with anything. The other friends had Southernly Fried Chicken and a fish entree. They said the grits were fine (one was not from the south and had not eaten grits) but there were only 3 shrimp, and they were average. She didn't seem to think it was right, but he was leaving the table so she said it maybe would be ok with some "air." Anyway, two friends had barbecue Shrimp and grits. He returned after a while and poured it into a glass for one to taste which still had remnants of the other wine. They asked about the price and then told him one. Fred (the server) then told them about 2 other types of wine and asked which they wanted. He asked if they wanted the same they had, and they said no, and then asked for a wine menu again. They had been trying to order another bottle, and when they finally got the server's attention and were trying to explain that they needed to see the menu to make their selection, he never understood that. My water was empty, and my friends' wine was long gone. The chicken livers were good, but not very warm either. In the heart of Winston-Salem’s Downtown Arts District, Sweet Potatoes restaurant greets its clientele with an atmosphere and cuisine that mirror the lively mix of shops, studios, and galleries surrounding it. The okra and tomatoes were very soggy and barely warm. I had ordered the fried okra and green tomatoes and the chicken livers (appetizers) as my meal. After 2 hours, our food was delivered by a different server. We enjoyed our conversation, but began to notice that many tables around us had come and gone, and we still had no food. Some of us did not have silverware, but we asked another server and she brought it. We really liked the dip but there was not nearly enough crackers/bread, so half of it was not eaten. The appetizer arrived in about 20 minutes. We were curious about the Collard Dip, so we ordered that as an appetizer and also ordered our meals at the same time. We asked questions about the menu, but didn't really receive clear answers. They finally decided upon one and he brought it after a brief wait. The other ladies wanted to share a bottle of wine, but the server didn't seem to know any answers to their questions. They seated the five of us at a small table for four. There was a small bench inside for waiting, and many were also along the sidewalk outside, but you have to stay close and listen carefully to hear your name. We arrived around 7 pm and waited about 30 minutes or less for a table.

After reading the reviews for area restaurants while at a conference at Wake Forest University, four of my colleagues and I decided to have dinner at Sweet Potatoes for our one night of the week that we had free of obligations.
